My Favorite Gardening Blogs

Gardening, for me, isn’t just a weekend hobby—it’s a way of connecting with the seasons, the soil, and the excitement of watching something grow. Like all gardeners, I’m always learning. Whether I’m working in the nursery or winding down at the end of the day, I love soaking up ideas and inspiration from other gardeners.

Over the years, I’ve found a handful of gardening blogs that I regularly read. So, if you’re ever in need of a little inspiration (or just something lovely to read over your morning cuppa), here are a few of my favorites.

Michael McCoy – The Gardenist Blog

Michael McCoy has a knack for seeing gardens as living, breathing compositions. His blog, The Gardenist, is a gentle blend of his gardening thought with a focus on seasonal change. It’s a great read with weekly garden thoughts and plant features.

Charles Dowding – No-Dig Gardening Pioneer

If you’ve ever been curious about organic gardening but felt overwhelmed by all the dos and don’ts, Charles Dowding is great. His no-dig method flips traditional gardening on its head—instead of turning over the soil, he layers compost and lets nature do the work. The result? Healthier soil, fewer weeds, and a whole lot less backache. His blog is packed with practical advice that’s easy to follow, and I love commitment to sustainability.

Michael Cooke – A Unique Australian Perspective

Gardening in Australia comes with its own quirks—intense heat, dry spells, and wildly varied conditions depending on where you are. That’s why I really enjoy Michael Cooke’s blog. He brings a uniquely Australian lens to garden design, blending structure and softness in a way that works with the climate, not against it. If you’re looking for ideas that feel both achievable and aspirational, this blog is well worth exploring.

Monty Don – Timeless Gardening Wisdom

I came across Monty Don from watching Gardeners’ World. His website is like a gentle chat with an old friend—full of seasonal reminders, planting tips, and little reflections that make you want to head straight outside and get your hands dirty.

Fine Gardening – A Comprehensive Resource

If you’re in the mood to go deep into a topic—whether it’s pruning shrubs, designing borders, or understanding soil pH—Fine Gardening is a fantastic resource. It’s a US-based publication, so some of the plant suggestions may vary from what we use here in Australia, but the overall advice and design inspiration is good.

Noel Kingsbury – A Thoughtful Approach to Gardening

Noel Kingsbury writes the kind of blog that makes you pause and think. He explores the often relationships between plants, landscapes, and ecology. His reflections often remind me that gardening is as much about observing as it is about doing—and something I must do more often.

The Middle Sized Garden – Perfect for Everyday Gardeners

The Middle-Sized Garden is full of clever, down-to-earth ideas for making the most of whatever space you have. Whether you’re working with a compact backyard or a suburban block, the blog proves that beautiful, functional gardens are possible.

Each of these blogs has added something to the way I plan, plant, and garden—and I hope they’ll do the same for you. So, grab yourself a cuppa, settle into a comfy chair, and have a look. You never know what little spark of inspiration might be waiting.
