Iris unguicularis (Algerian or Winter Iris) is an evergreen rhizomatous perennial with sweetly scented 5-8 cm flowers of lavender to deep violet with its falls beautifully marked with white and deep yellow at their base. They rise atop a dense clump of grassy foliage of dark green, narrow, tough leaves. It is a fabulous plant because of its flowering time in late Autumn into Winter when so few other plants are flowering in the garden. It also makes excellent cut flowers.
